Wendie Austin Named Centre Softball Coach DANVILLE, KY - Wendie Austin, a 1994 Centre College graduate, has been named the collee's head softball coach. Austin succeeds Stephanie Dragan who will remain at Centre as head volleyball coach. Austin was a standout athlete while attending Centre. She played on the varsity basketball team for four years and was a third-team Kodak All-American as a senior. She is Centre's all-time leader in rebounds and scored 1,343 points, placing her third in career scoring. She was also named player of the year in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference both her junior and senior years. Austin currently is the assistant coach for the women's basketball team and will remain in that capacity for the 2000-2001 season. A native of Burgin, Austin played softball and basketball in high school. Centre did not field a softball team during her student years. The college established softball as a club sport in 1996 and a varsity sport in 1999. Austin will inherit a team that improved from 2-15 in 1998 to 8-10 in the most recent spring season. For 2001, the Colonels will return seven of nine starters. Austin is excited about her promotion. "There are good people in the program already," she said, "and that's one reason I took the job. I feel I have a good perspective on Centre, and although I've got a lot to learn, I hope to get Centre to the top of the conference." Austin coached the boys and girls basketball teams at King Middle School in Mercer County where she served as athletic director. She recently received a master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University. - end - Communications Office Sports information: Ed Rall |
