Scholar to speak on environmental responsibility at Centre College

DANVILLE, KY - Centre College students in a new environment club will host a program Tuesday, April 11, on environmental responsibility. The program, which will feature David Shaner of the Furman University faculty, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Young Hall room 101. The program is open to the public at no cost.

The new environment club at Centre is known as E.C.C.O. or the Environmentally Conscious Centre Organization.

Shaner, a professor of Asian Studies at Furman, has titled his remarks "Environmental Responsibility: Selflessness, Buddhism and The Sermon on the Mount." He will focus on the idea of selflessness as the basis of a larger community sense of self, which leads to compassion for others and the environment. According to Shaner, both Christianity and Buddhism encourage their adherents to 'give up the self' for the greater good.

A widely recognized scholar, editor and author, Shaner has lived in a monastery and is a former member of the Olympic Valley Ski U.S.A team.
