DANVILLE, KY - The annual Centre College observance of Family Weekend, set for Oct. 27 and 28, will feature a concert by Art Garfunkel, musical icon of the 1970s and 1980s. The Oct. 28 concert is nearly sold out, according to staff members in the college's Norton Center for the Arts. Family Weekend, which is planned especially for families of currently enrolled Centre students, will bring several hundred visitors to the campus for events including academic samplers, parent appointments with faculty advisors and a mini-concert by Centre music students. The academic samples are brief versions of classroom lectures by some of Centre's most stimulating professors. This year's samplers will feature Milton Reigelman, director of international programs; David Anderson, economist; and Jean Porterfield, biologist. Richard Trollinger and Clarence Wyatt, the two administrators who co-chaired recent preparations for the vice presidential debate at Centre, will give an insider's view of the issues and challenges involved in preparing for the debate. Family Weekend registration begins at noon on Friday, Oct. 27, and continues throughout the afternoon in the lobby of Old Centre. On Friday afternoon, parents may attend class with their sons or daughters, schedule appointments with faculty advisors or attend soccer games at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The college will host an evening student-faculty showcase of talent at the Combs Student Center, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The Saturday schedule for Family Weekend features campus tours for siblings of Centre students, along with the academic samplers and a faculty art show. The student concert begins at 11 a.m. in Weisiger Theatre in the Norton Center for the Arts. Centre president John Roush and his wife, Susie, will host a reception at Craik House after the 1:30 p.m. football game against DePauw University. The annual "Centre Family Celebration" runs 6-8 p.m. at the Combs Student Center. Art Garfunkel will appear in concert at the Norton Center on Saturday night. Mona Wyatt, director of parent programs, is coordinator of Family Weekend. - end -
