Centre College staff, faculty earn recent
honors RELEASED: Dec. 6, 2000 DANVILLE, KY - James P. Leahey, director of gift planning and associate college counsel at Centre College, has been appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of College and University Law. The Journal has the second largest circulation of any law journal or review in the country. It is cosponsored by the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the University of Notre Dame Law School, Leahey is a 1992 graduate of Centre and holds a law degree from Indiana University. He joined the college staff in 1997. In other recent news from the college, faculty member Karin Ciholas has been honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award for the year 2000 from the University of Richmond. Ciholas, who is Van Winkle Professor of Language at Centre, has received other honors including the the 1999 Acorn Award for outstanding teaching, given by Kentucky Advocates for Higher Education She has taught at Centre for 26 years. Bruce Johnson, James Graham Brown Associate Professor of Economics at the college, is the author of an opinion piece on campaign finance reform that was distributed to newspapers across the nation by the Knight-Ridder/Tribune wire service. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram featured the piece prominently on its Sunday opinion page just prior to the election. In the article, Johnson took the position that campaign finance reform is unlikely to curb the influence of money in politics. In the opinion piece he writes: "The most effective way to reduce campaign contributions would be to radically reduce government's power to tax, spend and regulate. Diminish the government's impact on our wallets and special interests won't be so interested anymore."
