Norton Center Tours

An inside look at the Vice Presidential Debate Hall

Beginning Monday (October 2) at 6 a.m., the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) will begin set construction of Newlin Hall at the Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. The CPD has granted tours of the Debate Hall to local school children during debate week at Centre.

The Debate Hall
The only vice presidential debate this year will take place in Newlin Hall at Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Norton Center is a 85,000 square-foot complex designed by architect William Wesley Peters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Newlin Hall, a 1,500-seat concert hall, is known to have one of the finest acoustical designs in the country.

The Commission on Presidential Debates will be handling all set construction for the debate hall. From the removal of seats and the installation of special air conditioning vents to the building of remote TV studios, Newlin Hall has undergone many changes to accommodate the debate.

Tours for Local School Children
Set construction of the debate hall, including the construction of the stage and the temporary remote TV studios, is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, October 2.

The CPD has opened the debate hall for tours of the construction process. With a strong commitment to education, Centre felt that offering tours to local school children would indeed make the debate an educational experience for school children of all ages throughout the county. From fourth graders to seniors in high school, local schools will have the opportunity to have an inside look at the debate hall for the only vice presidential debate of the 2000 election.

Tour Times and Dates
Tours to local school children will be given on Monday, October 2 and Tuesday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be two tours each hour-beginning on the hour and at fifteen past the hour. Tours will be led by Centre College students and staff. All tours will be monitored for security purposes.
