Heather Stone

selected as Centre College volunteer of the month

RELEASED: Dec. 14, 2000

DANVILLE, KY – Heather Stone of Knoxville, Tenn., has been selected as the December Volunteer of the Month at Centre College. She was chosen for her fundraising work with Jennie Rogers Elementary School.

Stone, a sophomore, who tutors 5th graders at Jennie Rogers thought a Washington, D.C., trip would help the students in their government classes. Jennie Rogers' students had done annual trips to Washington in years past, but lack of funds prevented any recent trips.

Stone, who had gone to Washington in elementary school, was determined for these students to have the same experience. Thus began her fundraising activities.

She arranged a baked goods sale, supported by a local grocery store chain. Stone and her Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sisters baked many goodies over the Thanksgiving holiday. She also organized a silent auction and got area businesses to donate items for the event including a TV/VCR unit, Christmas floral arrangements, gift certificates, and videos. Stone also got many sponsors for a Jingle 5K Run and had 60 runners participate, even though it was a very cold, snowy day. In total, she raised $2,500.

Stone, who plans to be an orthodontist, is a biochemistry and molecular biology major. At Centre she is a member of the soccer team, Student Congress, L.I.F.T. (Learning is Fun Together), Habitat for Humanity, Student Activities Council, and C.A.R.E. (Centre Action Reaches Everyone).
