Arp named October Volunteer of the Month

RELEASED: October 16, 2001

DANVILLE, KY – Centre College senior Alli Arp has been named as Volunteer of the Month for October. She received the honor for her coordination efforts this fall with the L.I.F.T. (Learning Is Fun Together) program.

Going into its 11th year the L.I.F.T. program at Centre is prepared and run by Centre education majors. The program is designed for 4th and 5th graders from the Danville and Boyle county area and its main purpose is to keep learning fun.

Arp, who is the chair for L.I.F.T., contributed her time this year making sure all volunteers and lesson plans were in place. " L.I.F.T. has been a tremendous success this fall due to the elementary education majors and our volunteers. Everyone's enthusiasm is contagious and education majors have put so much effort into planning each night, tending to the 4th and 5th grade students' needs, and ensuring that they are learning but also having fun," Arp says. "I think that L.I.F.T. not only serves a purpose in guiding the elementary school students but the college students as well. While the education majors are exposed to them often, other members of the Centre community now have the opportunity to work with young people from the community, impacting everyone who is involved."

Arp, an elementary education major from Georgetown, will begin student teaching in February. She is the daughter of Earl and Mary Arp of Georgetown and is a graduate of Russell High School in Russell, Ky.

Arp is also involved in C.A.R.E. (Centre Action Reaches Everyone). She is president of the Kentucky Education Association Student Program and has served as vice president of risk management and education on the Panhellenic Executive Council. Arp was also a member of the 2001 homecoming court at Centre.

Kentucky's highest ranked national institution, Centre is listed by U.S. News and World Report among the country's top 50 national liberal arts colleges. Centre leads all colleges and universities in the percentage of alumni who give annual financial support.
