RELEASED: September 20, 2001

DANVILLE, KY— During a program discussing terrorist attacks on America, a panel of experts from Centre College deplored the violence of Sept. 11 and urged those in attendance to look at all the issues carefully in this complex and unprecedented situation.

About 200 people convened at Newlin Hall in the Norton Center for the Arts Sept.16 for the special program "Placing Tragedy in Context."

The four-person panel spoke and answered questions from the audience. The panelists included Bill Garriott, professor of government; Lori Hartmann-Mahmud, visiting assistant professor of international studies; Phyllis Passariello, associate professor of anthropology; and Nayef Samhat, assistant professor of government and international relations.

The panelists talked about political rhetoric, a possible international alliance, the state of the Middle East, Islam, and many other issues surrounding the tragedy.

The program was introduced by vice president and dean of the college, John Ward, and the panel presentations were moderated by the College's president, John Roush.
