Baird book on women's sports at Centre published

Kitty Baird tells story of female sports at Centre College

DANVILLE, KY—Nearly 150 years of women's athletics at Centre College is covered in the recently released book "Women Athletes Blazing a Trail: A History of Women's Participation in Sport at a Small Liberal Arts College" by Kitty Rogers Baird.

The 204-page book covers much more than just the games and the final statistics, but also obstacles female athletes had to overcome in their fight for equality with men's sports.

Baird is professor emeritus of Centre College. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Radford. She holds advanced degrees from the Woman's College (UNC-Greensboro) and Eastern Kentucky University. She taught at Centre for more than 40 years where she started and directed the women's sports programs. Baird coached basketball, field hockey, and tennis. She was founder of two college women's athletic conferences. She retired at the end of 1999 as professor and chair of health and human performance and associate director of athletics.
