"Bent Stone" Exhibit at Centre

RELEASED: Feb. 13, 2001

DANVILLE, KY - The Centre College Art Program will present a sculpture exhibit by noted Louisville artist, Ewing Fahey. Entitled "Bent Stone" the exhibit, held in the AEGON Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center, runs from March 2-30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Two special events will kick-off the show. Ewing Fahey will give a Gallery Talk on March 1 at 4:15 p.m., and the Opening Reception will be from 4 - 6 p.m. on March 2. Both events are free and open to the public.

Fahey's works often combine textured limestone with found wood or painted steel. "I like to play with opposites, states Fahey, "to make inert stone appear soft, in motion, and lightweight." Critics have described Fahey's work as "evocative" and "finely executed."

Viewers have asked Fahey, in all seriousness, how she is able to bend stone. "'Bending' stone around wood or steel or cantilevering it into space demands a careful balance of weight and mass. It's important to me to achieve this without artificially pinning elements in place, thus letting the work speak for the balance life demands."

Ewing Fahey, a Louisville native, always dreamed of becoming a sculptor. In 1981 at the age of 59 and after a successful career as an editor, teacher and art director, she presented her first solo art show. Nine years later, she was co-winner of a regional competition to create a landmark for a historic Louisville neighborhood. Since that time, she has exhibited in 55 solo and group shows and has works in public and private collections in seven states. She is a founding member of ENID, Generations of Women Sculptors, a group of 15 Louisville area sculptors, all working professionals, involved in the community. In 1987, she chaired the stone panel at the National Sculpture conference: Works by Women, in Cincinnati. She holds a BA in studio art and art history from the University of Louisville. Ewing Fahey is represented by Heike Pickett Galleries, located in Versailles and Lexington.
