RELEASED: December 13, 2001
DANVILLE, KYCentre College's Brian Britt has been named first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.
With this honor the 5-foot-6, 165-pound cornerback will play in the Aztec Bowl Saturday in Mexico City, an all-star game made up of the best NCAA Division III players in the nation. He is expected to handle cornerback and return duties in the contest.
Britt was the Special Teams Player of the Year in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for the third consecutive year. Britt finished his senior season with nine interceptions, second in the nation, and ran three punts back for touchdowns. He averaged 15.9 yards per return and helped lead Centre to a 9-1 record. It was the teams most wins since its famed 1921 team finished with a 10-1 mark, including an upset over No.1-ranked Harvard.
Britt is a native of Bowling Green, Ky., and played for Warren East High School. While at Centre he has been an all-conference performer in basketball, football, and track. He holds four school records in football and a school and conference record in basketball.
"Hes very deserving of this honor," said head football coach Andy Frye. "We could always count on him to make a big play. He changed the momentum of a game very quickly, and opposing teams began to kick away from him because he was so dangerous. He is an outstanding football player and theres no question about him being an All-American."
