Trip more than just a game for Centre football player

Playing in Aztec Bowl just one of Brian Britt’s exciting experiences in Mexico

RELEASED: December 20, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—Talk about a hero's welcome! Brian Britt has performed on some pretty big stages during his time as a standout athlete in football and basketball, but he’ll be hard-pressed to top the experience he had in Mexico last weekend.
Centre College's Britt, a first-team All-American NCAA Division III football player, was in Mexico last week participating in the Aztec Bowl, an all-star game made up of the best NCAA Division III players in the nation.
The highlight of the trip for the 5-foot-6, 165-pound cornerback/return specialist may not have been the game—a 37-5 victory by Britt’s USA Team versus Mexico. Britt and the other players in the game took part in a Christmas Parade in Saltillo, Mexico, attended by more than 300,000 people.
"It was crazy," said Britt, an economics major from Danville. "They treated us like NFL players. It was the biggest parade that I've ever seen. People ran up to our float to shake our hands and ask for autographs. And people sat their children on the float with us. It was a lot of fun."
Britt later played in front of a sellout crowd at Estadio Olimpico as the USA Team routed Mexico. At cornerback Britt helped lead a defense that kept Mexico out of the end zone. Britt also had two kickoff returns for 67 yards (one a 49-yard return) and two punt returns for 16 yards. For more on the contest, visit http://www.afca.com.
In between two-a-day practices leading up to the contest, Britt and his teammates explored the city, visited museums and watched a rodeo.
"The scenery was beautiful," he said. "We were treated well. They spoiled us to death with home-cooked meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner."
And the speedy athlete hasn't slowed down. After arriving back in the United States, he headed north to East Lansing, Michigan, where he is visiting Jordan Sutton, a 2001 graduate of Centre. Britt is exploring the job market there, but still found time to take in a Michigan State University basketball game this week.
