Centre College newspaper wins 15 awards at state competition

DANVILLE, KY-The staff of the Centre College newspaper, The Cento, won 15 awards in recent competition at the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association Conference in Richmond. The staff competed in Division B, which is open to any school with an enrollment under 5,000.
Three staff members were honored with first-place awards: freshman Stacy Hoehle of LaGrange for news story; and sophomore Nic Barbato of Erie, Pa., and junior Ryan Bowe of Nicholasville for informational graphic design.
Six staff members were honored with second-place awards: sophomores Tara Metts of Louisville and Amanda Richardson of Taylorsville, for front page layout;senior Daron Mills of Louisville for sports page layout; and junior Adriana Melnyk of Indianapolis, Bowe and Mills collaboratively won for best special section. Bowe was also honored for sports photo and advertising design.
Four staff members were honored with third-place a wards: sophomore Travis Stannard of Prince George, British Columbia, for original illustration; Amanda Richardson won third place for best news story out of 39 entries; and Ryan Bowe and Adriana Melnyk for features layout and photo essay.
Several staff members were honored with honorable mention awards: Daron Mills for sports-game story and informational graphic, sophomore Benjamin Beaton of Paducah, for sports column.
Overall, The Cento staff was honored with a second-place award for overall layout.
Bowe and Melnyk serve jointly as editors-in-chief of the student-based, bi- weekly publication.
