RELEASED: May 22, 2001
DANVILLE, KYColleen Harris, an international relations/Spanish major from Bay Shore, N.Y., has been awarded a full four-year fellowship and stipend to attend Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., where she will pursue a Ph.D. in political science.
In accepting the fellowship, Harris turned down the chance to go to South Korea for a year on a Fulbright Scholarship offer.
"I am very excited about pursuing my graduate studies at Emory University," Harris said. "They have a political science department with a lot of young and inspiring faculty members, and I have already been discussing some of the research I will be doing with my professors. I am particularly looking forward to continuing the research I began at Centre with Dr. (Nayef) Samhat, as well as designing my own courses for undergraduate students."
Harris plans to study the international political economy in relation to East and Southeast Asia.
Her career goal is to teach international relations at the undergraduate level.
Harris, a senior at Centre, is a two-time winner of the Robert E. Wallace Scholarship and has been a consistent member of the dean's list. She is also a John C. Young Scholar and a columnist for the Cento, the school's student newspaper.
She is the daughter of Shawn and Joanne Harris of Bay Shore.
