Centre Students Honored by Children's Home

RELEASED: Jan. 9, 2001

DANVILLE, KY -- Centre College students have received the annual Farris Clifton Award from the Christian Church Homes of Kentucky in honor of their extensive voluntary service to the homes. Formal presentation of the award was made in Louisville during a formal annual meeting of the homes.

Two Centre students, Beth Ann Choate of Somerset and Melinda Weathers of Danville, accepted on behalf of the college, along with Ann Young, director of volunteer services.

The citation for the college noted that Centre students have been volunteering at the Woodlawn Children's Campus in Danville since its establishment in 1949. Centre students have served as tutors, hosted parties and dances, invited the children to trick-or-treat in the college residence halls and sponsored fund raisers.

The Farris Clifton Award is named for a long-time executive director of the homes. It is given annually to a group for outstanding service to the homes and their residents.

The Christian Church Homes of Kentucky was created in 1884 and has more than 50 homes and programs throughout the state, serving older adults, troubled children and individuals with developmental disabilities.
