| Centre rolls out red carpet for Class of 2005
RELEASED: August 29, 2001
DANVILLE, KY Centre's Class of 2005 maybe could have moved into their new surroundings on a less humid day, but at least they had plenty of help.
Three-hundred freshmen were greeted by Centre College President John Roush, members of the school's faculty, and staff members Wednesday morning as they took their belongings into their dorm rooms.
"It's become a tradition here at Centre for our administration, faculty, staff and students to help our new students get settled in," Roush said. "Centre is an engaging place, and a place where we care about our students. And we start that on the first day."
Bethany Ellis, a freshman from Lincoln County High School, said she was glad to see members of the Centre community there to greet her. But it was also a trying day for Ellis.
"Yesterday my mom gave me a book in anticipation of today," Ellis said. "She always buys me a book for special occasions. It was a children's book, but it was really sweet. I cried when I read it.
"It's always hard leaving your family, but I'm excited to be at Centre and look forward to all my new experiences here."
This year's incoming freshman class will enter with impressive academic figures. Fifty-six percent are in the top 10 percent of their class, while the average G.P.A. is 3.73.
Twenty-three states and territories and five foreign countries are represented by 300 freshmen and 13 transfers.
There will be an orientation party at the Cheek/Evans/Yerkes Quad Thursday at 9 p.m. On Friday night at 9 the movie "Dazed and Confused" will be showing at the Cowan Dining Commons lawn as part of orientation. On Saturday and Sunday upperclassmen will report to campus. The opening convocation will take place at 7 p.m. in Newlin Hall Sunday. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents are welcome.
