Post-season awards roll in for Centre athletes

RELEASED: November 21, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—It came as no surprise that after having such a successful fall sports campaign Centre College saw many of its athletes capture post-season honors.

Centre athletic teams all had banner years in the recently concluded fall sports season. Each of Centre's seven fall sports teams — football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, field hockey and volleyball — finished with winning records.

In field hockey, Centre's Beth Moses was named Regional All-American for the second year in a row by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

In volleyball, freshman setter Leah Ballinger was named to the Division III All-South Region Team. Ballinger, junior middle hitter Lauren Crissey and freshman middle hitter Sara Hollowell were named to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference team.

In men's soccer, four members were named to All-SCAC. Sweeper Jeff Carrier and forward Matt Walksler were second-team members, and midfielders David Hewitt and Josh Haines were placed on the third team.

In women's soccer goalkeeper Jessica Chisley and defender Jennifer Riggs were first team All-SCAC, while midfielder Lindsay Yeakel, sweeper Laura Heil and forward Brianna Baker were named to the third team.

In football senior Brian Britt was named the SCAC's Special Teams Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. The 9-1 Colonels, who finished with the program's most wins in 76 years, placed 13 players on the all-conference squad. Besides Britt, making the first team were offensive guard Jeff Reynolds, place-kicker Nick Zilich, running back Jeremy Britt and wide receiver Jeremy Gomez. Making the second team were defensive back Eric Heyman, linebacker Adrien McKiness, punter John Jennings, defensive tackle Daniel Nipp, safety John Ortega, running back Travis Bell, guard Patrick Newman and quarterback Drew Mildren. Honorable mention selections were wide receiver Chuck Beard, defensive back John Gist, linebacker Carter Conley, split end Joe Guthrie and offensive lineman Richard Spear.

To boot, Ortega was named Defensive Player of the Week in the SCAC for his play in the season finale, a 34-31 victory at home against Rose-Hulman.

And two weeks ago Jackie Walisa and Kyle Poland were named all-conference in cross-country in the SCAC. Runner Aubrey Durbin earned all-region status by finishing 18th in the South Regional of the NCAA Division III cross country championship.
