Brass Band Festival draws its largest crowd

RELEASED: June 19, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—The 12th annual Great American Brass Band Festival held this past weekend at Centre College pulled in a record crowd. The crowds were believed to have totaled between 42,500 and 46,500 for the three-day event, festival organizers said.

Good weather was a contributor as Saturday and Sunday were warm yet pleasant after Friday produced high winds and some rain. The biggest crowds to the free public concerts came through Saturday when between 27,000 and 32,000 people took part in the festivities over the course of the day.

This year's festival included 22 bands from throughout the United States as well as groups from Canada and Spain. The Great American Brass Band Festival began in 1990.

Also, George Foreman, the festival's founder and organizer, was quoted in an article about brass bands in the Baltimore Sun this week.

The article quoting Foreman, managing director of the Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College, can be found at www.sunspot.net/news/local/carroll/bal-ca.band18jun18.story.
