Centre College student wins Goldwater Scholarship

RELEASED: April 18, 2001

DANVILLE, KY - Heidi Privett, a senior from Nicholasville, has been awarded a scholarship by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. The award is the premier honor for undergraduates majoring in the sciences, mathematics or engineering.

The Centre College chemistry major was one of only five Kentucky residents selected for the award. The Goldwater program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to undergraduate college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board-up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.

For this summer, she has been awarded a summer research fellowship at Columbia University. Last summer, Privett was awarded a Lando/National Science Foundation summer research fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She worked in the chemistry department studying the energy components of hydrogen bonds in proteins.

As a freshman, Privett won the Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award and she won the Organic Chemistry Award as a sophomore. She's consistently a member of the dean's list. She hopes to have a career in research. Her current interests are in pharmaceutical research and development.

"It is great to know that the federal government actively supports and encourages
undergraduate students in our pursuit of such careers in science, math and engineering," Privett said.

Privett is set to graduate from Centre in 2002 and plans to attend graduate school to study chemistry.
Privett, a 1998 graduate of East Jessamine High School, is the daughter of George Privett of Lexington and Holly Clendenin of Nicholasville.

Centre is a four-year liberal arts college with a selective admissions policy that favors students with distinctive records of high school academic achievement and strong scores on college entrance examinations. Centre has been cited by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 25 teaching colleges in the United States and one of the 15 "best buy" colleges in the country.
