Centre to keep alumni hopping at Homecoming 2001

Oak Ridge Boys to perform Friday night at Homecoming Gala

DANVILLE, KY—A concert by country music stars The Oak Ridge Boys will be one of the highlights to Centre College's homecoming weekend, Oct. 12-13. The concert at Centre's Norton Center for the Arts begins Friday at 8:30 p.m.

The college's two-day celebration, this year themed "Homecoming 2001: An Alumni Odyssey," kicks off Friday morning with a series of seminars to be held at Grant Hall. Registration for the seminars, conducted by Centre staff and faculty, is 8 a.m. at Grant Hall. The seminars are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Cantrell Professor of Art Stephen Powell will conduct the seminar "Venetian Glass: What Makes It So Special?" at the Jones Visual Art Center.

A reception for alumni will take place the entire day at the Chenault Alumni House.

The College's Norton Center for the Arts will host the annual Homecoming Gala with the 8:30 p.m. concert by The Oak Ridge Boys. For ticket information, contact the Norton Center box office at (859) 236-4692.

Homecoming continues Saturday morning with a 5K run that begins at Young Hall on Walnut Street. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and a fee is required.

The Alumni House will be open again Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will also be an open house at Old Centre from 9:30 a.m. to noon. An alumni/faculty reception will take place at the Combs Student Center from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At 11:45 a.m. the annual Centre alumni recognition luncheon will be held in the Cowan Dining Commons.

There will be plenty of sporting events on campus to attend. The men's and women's soccer teams will play a double-header with Sewanee Saturday. The women host Sewanee at 11 a.m., while the men follow at 1 p.m. At 10 a.m., the reserves of the men's soccer team will play Centre alumni soccer players. Also at 11 a.m., the Centre volleyball team will have an alumni match as the varsity faces off with former Centre spikers. At 2:30 p.m., Centre's football team, undefeated at 5-0, plays host to Maryville. Homer Rice, a Centre alumnus and football legend, is on campus this weekend to cheer on the Colonels. Also, one of the daughters of the late Bo McMillin, the shining star of Centre's upset of Harvard in the famed 1921 contest, will attend the football game.

The weekend concludes with a dinner/dance at Danville Country Club from 7 p.m. to midnight. Registration to attend the dinner/dance must be made before Saturday. Register by calling toll-free at (877) 678-9822 or (859) 238-5500, or call these numbers for any other questions regarding homecoming.
