| Sports legend to give pep talk to Centre football team

DANVILLE, KYHomer Rice, who was one of the nation's most respected collegiate administrators and a renowned football coach, will address the Centre College football team prior to its homecoming game with Maryville on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Rice, a Centre alumnus, coached football at the high school, collegiate and professional level. He was a high school football coach in Kentucky after attending Centre and later went on to coach the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. Rice is considered a pioneer of football's veer offense.
He served as athletics director at the University of North Carolina, Rice University and for 17 years at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he recently retired.
The NCAA named an award after him. The Homer Rice Award honors the athletics director or conference commissioner who most contributes exemplary service to college athletics.
Centre football coach Andy Frye developed a relationship with Rice, and Rice helped support the Centre football team on its trip to Europe this summer.
"We spoke in Atlanta at a convention last year and we talked about Centre football," Frye said. "It doesn't get any better than Homer Rice. We're really excited because he has meant so much to college athletics."
Centre enters this Saturday's home game with Millsaps undefeated at 4-0. Game time is 1:30. The homecoming contest with Maryville begins at 2:30 p.m.
