Centre College making a name for itself with international students

RELEASED: July 18, 2001

DANVILLE, KY — Maybe the name Centre College isn’t as recognizable overseas as Michael Jordan or McDonald’s quite yet, but the school is gaining more notoriety.

Centre received a record number of applications from international students this year—27 different countries represented in all.

Freshman students from Bangladesh, Turkey, Vietnam, India, Africa and Bulgaria will arrive on campus this fall.

Fuad Nasir, a native of Bangladesh who will be a sophomore at Centre, applied to more than 90 schools before deciding on Centre.

"I just fell in love with Centre," he said. "The rich culture and small setting were wonderful. I liked the thought of small classrooms as it gave a greater opportunity for students to interact with professors."

Nasir, who said he may possibly major in engineering, learned about the school by browsing the school’s Web site and reading other materials about the school on different Internet sites.

Centre recently created a page for international students. It can be found at www.centre.edu/web/admission/intlapplicants.html.

Jennifer Olchowy, assistant director of admission and coordinator of international recruitment, said she is delighted to welcome the international students to campus this fall.

"These students not only represent achievement in the classroom but also for their work on the athletic playing field, in the music room and in the debate hall, just to name a few of their activities," Olchowy said.

The Internet has become a very valuable tool for international students searching for colleges, Olchowy added.

The fall term at Centre begins Sept. 3.
