Centre student named state secretary

RELEASED: May 17, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—Jonathan Samford of Joliet, Ill., a freshman at Centre College, was elected State Secretary of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans on April 7, 2001 at the University of Louisville. The KFCR is the largest collegiate organization in Kentucky. Eleven schools were present at the convention to hear Congresswoman Anne Northup and other Republican speakers.

Samford's responsibilities include taking minutes at executive meetings, corresponding with local chapters, and creating a better-networked Federation so the organization will continue to be an influential player in state politics. He hopes to help create new chapters at other state universities and colleges.

Sanford is the son of Gary and Sharon Samford and is a graduate of Providence Catholic High School.

Centre is also represented in the College Democrats of Kentucky. Kent Barnett, a junior, won the state secretary democratic seat.

Founded in 1819, Centre is ranked by U.S. News and World Report among the country's top 50 national liberal arts colleges and leads all colleges and universities in the percentage of alumni who give annual financial support.
