Kentucky politicians visit Governor's Scholars Program at Centre

Greg Stumbo, Lindy Casebier to be "Leglislators-in-Residence

RELEASED: July 5, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—State Representative and House Majority Leader Greg Stumbo of Prestonsburg and Senator Lindy Casebier of Louisville will visit the Governor's Scholars Program at Centre College Tuesday as part of the new "Legislator-in-Residence" program.

The program is to bring the Scholars in contact with legislative leaders so the students can benefit from their knowledge and experience.

Stumbo and Casebier arrive Tuesday morning and will accompany the Scholars to class. Stumbo will attend a class taught by Madison Sewell, a recent graduate of Stanford law school and a Kentucky native, on political and legal issues of prison. Casebier will set in on a class about international relations. The class is taught by Vikenti Shimansky, a leading translator in the Ukraine who has translated for President Bush. Shimansky can simultaneously translate five different languages.

After their classes, the legislators will address the students and then have a question-and-answer session with the Scholars.

"This will help our Scholars better appreciate the important work that our elected officials do," said Milton Reigelman, director of special events for all three campuses of the GSP. "Our students will be excited. The question-and-answer session should be very lively. The students won't settle for cliched answers."

Stumbo and Casebier will hold a press conference at noon that day in the Heritage Room in Old Centre.
