Centre College Football Media Day set for Aug. 25

RELEASED: August 17, 2001

DANVILLE, KY— Centre College will host its annual Football Media and Picture day on Saturday, Aug. 25,10 a.m. at Farris Stadium.

Fourth-year coach Andy Frye will introduce his 2001 Colonels, led by all conference players Brian Britt (DB-Special Teams Player of the Year in the SCAC), Carter Conley (LB-81 tackles), Joe Guthrie (WR-41 catches), Jeremy Gomez (WR-45 catches), and record setting senior quarterback Drew Mildren.

Centre has also added new faces to its coaching staff including former players Drew Meyers and Todd Frakes. Meyers will handle the offensive line while Frakes will coach the
defensive backs.

Mildren, the son of former all-American quarterback Jack Mildren (Oklahoma), currently holds 16 school records. Mildren has completed 51% of his passes while at Centre for 5601 yards. Other notable records are his 37 career touchdown passes and 2,035 yards of total offense in 2000.

Other key figures for the Colonels include senior running back Travis Bell (Eminence, Ky.), junior defensive tackle Matt Johnson (Owensboro, Ky.), senior wide receivers Joe Guthrie (Campbellsburg, Ky.), and Jeremy Gomez (Bowling Green, Ky.). Despite being slowed by an injury in 2000, Bell still gained over 500 yards rushing. Guthrie and Gomez combined for 86 catches and 1025 yards and Johnson recorded 37 tackles including 2 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss.

Centre hopes to improve on last year's 5-5 record with six home games in 2001. The Colonels open the season at home Sept. 8, versus Earlham College.
