Mock Trial team starts on right foot

RELEASED: November 15, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—So much for opening-night jitters.

Centre College's Mock Trial team tied for 11th out of 25 teams at a meet Nov. 2-3 at Eastern Kentucky University. Centre, which had two teams in the tournament, defeated teams from Furman, Michigan and St. Vincent College that weekend.

Making this more impressive is that this was the first competition for the Mock Trial team at Centre.

Twenty-five teams competed in the tournament. A team is comprised of three lawyers, three witnesses and several alternates.

Thirteen members of Centre's Mock Trial team attended the meet. They were juniors Jacob Martin, Jody Wilcher, Susan Courtwright and Jessie Milby; sophomores Katie Cooper and Stacy Hoehle; and freshmen Scott Duzan, Diana Freeman, Cara Quilligan, Sarah Cable, Rebecca Tollefson, Lindsey Freibert and Marina Dickens. Senior Matt Tatman, junior Tate Yost and freshmen Ashley Smith and Justin O'Malley are team members who didn't make the trip.

The Mock Trial team formed at Centre last school year and is part of the national "American Mock Trial Association" (www.collegemocktrial.org).

The team plans to take part in scrimmages, and possibly compete in the regional tournament early next year.

"For Centre students that are interested pursuing law school, this is a really valuable experience," said team member Susan Courtwright. "Plus it gives you the chance to meet and compete against students from other colleges and universities."
