RELEASED: October 2, 2001
DANVILLE, KY This fall the Centre College Music Program is pleased to welcome 10 incoming freshmen who are recipients of the Centre Fine Arts Scholarship in Music. The scholarship recipients are: Candace Davis, Diana Freeman, Christopher Kramer, Rachel Lewis, Marjorie Pilkinton, Ashley Smith, Craig Stinson, Karen Wicke, Abby Winterberg, and William Young.
Barbara Hall, Centre professor and music program chair, says, "Centre College's first crop of music scholarship winners is a talented and diverse one. Five string players, three brass players, a flutist and a pianist come from Michigan, North Carolina, Indiana, Italy, and Kentucky. We in the Music Program are looking forward to performing with these talented students as they bring new excitement and commitment to music at the college. The scholarship program continues for next year with audition dates on January 19 and 26, 2002."
The Centre Fine Arts Scholarship, made possible by gifts from alumni, encourages students who demonstrate outstanding musical talent to attend the College. These scholarships are awarded to students who show outstanding promise in music, regardless of intended major. At Centre, the students will be able to work with outstanding faculty, experience world-class artists at the Norton Center for the Arts, and be involved in numerous student ensembles.
One of the recipients, Karen Wicke, comments, "Music has always been my one true passion in life. I think it simultaneously teaches you something concrete and something abstract. It is such a versatile discipline that allows for self-expression like nothing else. I also think it is such an enjoyable thing for an audience to share in. As a music student, I have a unique opportunity to give back to a community. This scholarship has given me confidence in my abilities at the collegiate level, and it excites me to know that I can share with students that have similar interests. This is truly a new opportunity for me."
