Owens Named Centre Track Coach
RELEASED: Feb. 15, 2001
DANVILLE, KY-Lisa Owens has been named the new head track coach at Centre College for both men and women. Owens will replace Terry Yeast, who resigned to take a football coaching position at Kentucky State University.
Owens is also the Centre men and women's cross-country coach, a position she has held the past three years. A native of Salvisa, KY, Owens seemed honored by the promotion. "This is something I never expected at this time in my life, but it's been an ambition of mine to be both the cross country and track coach at a college. I started running track in the third grade and it's been a huge part of my life. I'm comfortable coaching both and it's something I've been preparing for my whole life."
Owens is a graduate of Mercer County High School and Berea College. She earned varsity letters at Berea in cross-country, track, and tennis. In 1996 she was elected Berea's top senior woman athlete and still holds eight school track records. She also has a master's degree in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University.
The Colonels return several lettermen from last year's team. "I'm looking forward," said Owens, "to taking over a young and talented team. I'd like to work on adding numbers to our squad so our depth will be better. This will take some time I know. I'd really like to increase my knowledge of both sports and continue to improve as a coach. I've got a couple of great assistants in Layne Schwier and Tom Brown and Centre is a place I've respected for a long time."
The Colonels participate in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and will open the season February 24 at the DePauw Indoor Invitational.
