Centre College Poetry Slam

RELEASED: Mar. 2, 2001

DANVILLE, KY - The Centre College Poets' Society and T.J.'s Coffeehouse held an open mic poetry night at TJ's on February 28. High school students, Centre students, Centre alumni, and area residents shared original poetry and spoken word.

Along with the poetry and spoken word was a competitive Poetry Slam. "Slamming," introduced by Mark Smith in 1987, is an intense display of spoken word that usually involves heightened speech and increased dramatic emphasis. Emceed by Centre student Kelly Conrad, this poetry slam consisted of two rounds, and was judged by audience members not participating in the contest.

Jayve Montgomery '01 won the ground prize of $25 sponsored by the Centre Poets' Society and one-pound of coffee from T.J.'s. Corey Dugan '01 won first prize of $15 and a half-pound bag of coffee.

The Poetry Slam occurs on the last Wednesday of every month.
