Governor takes time to talk with GSP Scholars

RELEASED: August 1, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—Governor Paul Patton said that though the 2001 Governor's Scholars have made an effort to better secure their future through education, they should take it upon themselves to see that their peers back home do the same.

Patton addressed the GSP members Friday, July 27, in front of Old Centre. His visit to the Centre campus was the first time Governor Patton has addressed members of the program at a host site. The GSP's five-week session ended the next day.

"It's not economics," Patton said. "It's a matter of personal will and commitment. As you go back to your communities, urge your friends to make the commitment to absorb a high-quality education."

Today's youth have far greater opportunities than he did growing up, Patton said, but added they also have greater problems facing them.

He said that through education you can further enjoy travel, history, art and culture.

The Governor was presented gifts by the students, and also received a standing ovation.

Centre President John Roush also addressed the crowd.

"This experience is something that I hope you'll never forget," he said. "And please, come back to see us often."
