Centre College names three to endowed professorships

DANVILLE, KY- Centre College has selected three members of the faculty to assume endowed professorships. John C. Ward, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, announced the appointments which begin with the 2001 fall term.

David Anderson will be the recipient of the Paul G. Blazer Professorship of
Economics. The Blazer professorship was established by Ashland Oil Inc. and Mrs. James T. Norris in memory of her late husband, Paul G. Blazer. Blazer was an Ashland Oil CEO and Centre trustee and trustee emeritus. Anderson joined the faculty in 1992 after earning degrees at Duke University (M.A., Ph.D.) and the University of Michigan (B.A. with high honors). Anderson has expertise in the economics of law, crime, and the environment. He has written 20 scholarly articles and five books.

Barbara Hall will receive the Charles T. Hazelrigg Professorship in the Humanities. A veteran teacher, conductor and performer, Hall directs Centre's choral program. She has been on the faculty since 1980. Hall earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan, a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and doctorate from Indiana University. In addition to her contributions to the college as teacher and musician, Hall served as Associate Dean from 1992 to 1998.

Jane Joyce will hold the Paul L. Cantrell Professorship in the Humanities. Joyce is a professor of classics and has been on the Centre faculty since 1978. Joyce played a key role in establishing Centre's major in the classics and has played a leadership role in the college's humanities program. She holds a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College and master's and doctoral degrees in classics from the University of Texas at Austin. Joyce is an accomplished translator of Latin texts in English, and she is a published poet as well.
