| Centre College student receives scholarship
RELEASED: May 17, 2001
DANVILLE, KYCentre College senior Todd Ullrich has received a scholarship to teach in Austria beginning this fall.
Ullrich, a German major/international studies minor from Bowling Green, Ky., will travel to Austria Oct. 1 of this year until May 31, 2002. He will assist in teaching English to German-speaking high school students at two high schools, one in Leibnitz and the other in Kaindorf An Dersulm.
Before Ullrich arrived at Centre, he had never taken a German class, but decided to do so upon the advice of Centre English Professor Dr. Mark Rasmussen. Ullrich hasn't looked back since.
"My goal was to be in Germany or a German-speaking country next year," said Ullrich, who studied in Germany in 1999. "It was as simple as that.
"My great-great grandfather was German. He came to the United States from Germany. I was interested in German because it seemed like something out of the ordinary. I like the participation we have in class, and the challenge of the language."
He will be teaching class 12 hours a week at the high schools, and plans to soak up as much culture as he can during his time there, Ullrich said.
Ultimately, Ullrich said he would like to teach German, but wouldn't turn down an opportunity to find a job using his experience to translate or in a diplomatic position.
Ullrich, who attended Warren Central High School, is the son of Joseph Ullrich of Clarksville, Ind., and Brenda Ullrich of Indianapolis.
Centre has had 16 Fulbright Scholars in the past 10 years, in addition to a Rhodes Scholar in the class of 2000.
