| Former NASA astronaut to speak at Centre for Governor's Scholars Program

DANVILLE, KYGovernor's Scholars will not only get to see fireworks shot into space this 4th of July, but will get to hear about those faraway destinations on Independence Day as former NASA astronaut Story Musgrave visits the Centre College campus.
Musgrave, of Lexington, Ky., who is now a consultant for the Disney Company, will discuss his travels in space at 7:30 p.m. in Newlin Hall of the Norton Center for the Arts during the 19th session of the Governor's Scholars Program. The program is free and open to the public.
A member of NASA for 30 years (1967-1997), Musgrave spent a total of 1,281 hours, 59 minutes and 22 seconds in space as a veteran of six space flights.
He was a crew member of the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Challenger, a five-day mission. He also served aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
His last mission was as a member of the crew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia from Nov. 19 to Dec. 7, 1996. In completing this mission he logged a record 278 earth orbits, traveling more than seven million miles in nearly 18 days.
In 1992 he received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, one of his many honors.
A Boston native who considers Lexington his hometown, Musgrave received undergraduate training at Syracuse University (B.S. in mathematics and statistics). He holds additional degrees from the University of California-Los Angeles (M.B.A. in operations analysis and computer programming), Marietta College (B.A. in chemistry), Columbia University (M.D.), and the University of Kentucky (M.S. in physiology and biophysics). In 1987 he received a master's in literature from the University of Houston.
Musgrave has spoken at Centre for the Governor's Scholars Program on several occasions.
Also scheduled to speak during the Governor's Scholars Program will be African-American historian George Wright July 9, poet and Centre graduate George Ella Lyon July 17, and Collie King, director of a scholarly web site, on July 26.
A 4th of July celebration will follow Musgrave's speech at 9 p.m. on the Old Centre lawn.
