"Christmas Feast at the Spanish Court"
presented by music program
RELEASED: December 6, 2001
DANVILLE, KYThe Centre College Music Program will present a Christmas Feast entitled "A Renaissance Christmas Feast at the Spanish Court" on Dec. 15 and 16 at 6 p.m. in the Cowan Dining Commons on the Centre Campus. A performance limited to Centre students will take place on Dec. 7.
Attendees will be transported back in time to the year 1615 for the annual holiday festivities of the Spanish Court of King Felipe and Queen Isabel. The court's chef will prepare an elegant multi-course feast of old-world delicacies including almond stuffed dates in honey, egg and chicken pie, carved pork loin, wheat pudding with saffron, and almond custard with berries.
The royal couple will fill the evening with songs, both jolly and reverent, and dances with leaps and stamping. During the festivities the king will welcome some itinerant storytellers who share a folk tale. A surprise guest will arrive, the master playwright of the era, Miguel de Cervantes, with a new play in hand. But will it be done; is there a stage and capable actors? A bit of intrigue, a bit of persuasion, a torch-led procession to the ceremonial hall, and the show will be on!
Centre Music Professor Barbara Hall invites all to "spend an evening in another time, another culture, to be entertained in body, mind, and soul."
Tickets for the feast are $28 each, and discounted tickets ($24) are available for groups of 10 or more, senior citizens, and children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the box office at Centre's Norton Center for the Arts. Reserve tickets by phone by calling (859) 236-4692. Early ticket purchase is advised since seating is limited for this popular event. For more information, contact Hall at (859) 238-5431 or hallb@centre.edu.
