More than 300 attend workshop for prospective students and their families

RELEASED: August 15, 2001

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College's "College Search Summer Workshop" had more than 300 guests from seven states visit campus Aug. 10 to learn more about college life.

There were 162 high school students in attendance, 117 seniors and 45 juniors, along with their family members.

The program was designed to provide helpful information about the college search process to high school students and their families.

They learned of this experience from a variety of perspectives—from current college students, from parents of college students, from admission representatives (Centre, University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt University) and college guidance counselors.

The high school students also took part in a session called "Making the Most of an Interview" in which they went through a mock admission interview.

Students and their families were then given the opportunity to further explore Centre's campus.

Chris Richardson, a senior-to-be at Trinity High School in Louisville, and his mother, Amy, visited Olin Hall to check out the chemistry labs. J. Preston Miles, professor of chemistry at Centre, gave the Richardsons a personal tour.

"He answered a lot of our questions and showed us around," Amy Richardson said. "It was really nice of him to take time out of his day on a Friday afternoon to do that. We were really impressed with the personal touch."

Zack Edens, a senior-to-be at West Jessamine High School, said he picked up some good pointers at a question-and-answer session that was held at the end of the workshop.

"I ended up meeting up with a couple of friends of mine (at the workshop), and we all enjoyed it," he said. "It seemed like it reached everyone I associated with. The program covered the bases pretty well."

Centre's Admission Office will hold two open houses this fall for high school seniors. The first will be Saturday, Sept. 29 followed by one held Saturday, Nov. 10. For more information, call the Admission Office at (800) 423-6236 or e-mail admission@centre.edu.
