Ann Landers touted Centre in columns

RELEASED: Aug. 8, 2002

DANVILLE, KY—Ann Landers, who recently passed away after a career that spanned more than 40 years as a nationally syndicated columnist, was a fan of Centre and occasionally praised the College in her replies to those seeking advice. The following letter and response was published in the mid-1980s.

Ann Landers Says, British Spellings Make No Sense—with One Exception

"Dear Ann: I was surprised to read the letter from the 'Red, White and Blue Yankee' who wrote, 'Southerners should learn to spell.' It was a most inappropriate and tasteless admonishment from an American who drops the 'u' from 'honour' and 'colour' and spells 'realise' and 'centre,' 'realize' and 'center.' Americans should return to the true English spoken in the British Isles, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Long live the Queen's English!—A Canadian Anglophile from Toronto"

"Dear Canadian: On my honour, I've tried labouriously to colour my speech by including the extra 'u,' but it still comes out 'honor' and 'color.' What good is the 'u'? As for centre, that also belongs to the theatre of the absurd—except in the case of Centre College in Kentucky—which happens to be one of
the finest small schools in the nation."
