Centre welcomes impressive freshman class

DANVILLE, KY-Centre College's Class of 2006 will arrive on campus Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The College will welcome 304 first-year students and eight transfer students. The freshmen enter with a strong academic profile. The average ACT score is 27. Fifty-six percent are in the top 10 percent of their class and 38 percent in the top five. The class has 32 valedictorians and 13 salutatorians. Sixty-four of the freshmen were Kentucky Governor's Scholars.

Twenty-two states and three foreign countries are represented in the class. Sixty-three percent are from Kentucky, with Tennessee and Ohio the states next best represented.

The class is 50 percent male, 50 percent female.

Classes at Centre begin Monday, Sept. 2.

Kentucky's highest ranked national institution, Centre is listed by U.S. News and World Report among the country's top 50 national liberal arts colleges and is the most affordable of those schools. In the 2001 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), Centre received the top score in the category of "supportive campus environment" for first-year students at a liberal arts institution. Centre also ranked in the 90th percentile nationally in five benchmark NSSE categories of effective educational practice for first-year students.
