Top Irish band Danú performs
RELEASED: April 15, 2002
DANVILLE, KY-Centre College hosted an evening of traditional Irish music featuring the seven-member band Danú, one of the most popular Irish traditional bands performing today. Danú performed on April 14 at the Combs Student Center (The Warehouse) on campus.
Named for an ancient Irish goddess linked to prosperity and the land, Danú plays reels, jigs and traditional songs and is known for the precise, electrifying performances of its members. Danú is a young band from Ireland with members from Waterford, Tipperary and Dublin. With five possible melody instruments and three accompanying instruments, they create a full, dynamic sound both on stage and in the studio.
Traditional Irish music is Danú's identity. Each of the seven men of Danú has been playing Irish music since childhood. While the group has a strong ethos of loyalty to the tradition from which their music comes, they bring a fresh, inspired approach to their performances.
Danú was named "Best Band of the Year" at the 2001 BBC Radio 2 Folk Music Awards, and the group has recently released its second CD, "All Things Considered," on the Shanachie label. The band has performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe at sold-out concert tours and festivals.
The band members are: Brendan "Benny" McCarthy (button accordian), Eamon Doorley (bouzouki, mandola), Ciarán Ó Gealbháin (vocals, piano accordian), Tom Doorley (flute, low whistle), Donnchadh Gough (uilleann pipes, bodhrán), Noel Ryan (guitar) and Oisin McCauley (fiddle).
