Centre opens with large enrollment

DANVILLE, KY—For the fourth time in the past five academic years Centre College opened with more than 1,050 students.

Classes began Monday, Sept. 2, with an enrollment of 1,056 students, the second highest in Centre's history. The College had a record enrollment of 1,071 students last September.

The new student body includes 298 freshmen and seven transfer students. The Class of 2006 enters with an impressive academic profile.

The average ACT score for the freshman class is 27. Fifty-six percent are in the top 10 percent of their class and 38 percent in the top five. The class has 32 valedictorians and 13 salutatorians. Sixty-four of the freshmen were Kentucky Governor's Scholars.

Kentucky's highest ranked national institution, Centre is listed by U.S. News and World Report among the country's top 50 national liberal arts colleges and is the most affordable of those schools. In the 2001 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), Centre received the top score in the category of "supportive campus environment" for first-year students at a liberal arts institution. Centre also ranked in the 90th percentile nationally in five benchmark NSSE categories of effective educational practice for first-year students.
