Centres Career Services completes first externship program
RELEASED: Feb. 21, 2002
DANVILLE, KY-For Centre College senior Chris Priddy what started as a humbling experience turned into a very helpful one.
Priddy, along with 13 other Centre students, recently completed the school's first externship program. This program, developed and overseen by Career Services, links students and alumni. Twenty-three alumni volunteered to host the students. The students each spent two to three days shadowing an alum and learned more about his or her career field.
Priddy completed his externship at Humana, Inc., of Louisville. He shadowed an actuarial student with the company. Priddy, a senior math major from Elizabethtown, took an actuarial test and was taken aback by how challenging it was.
But the person Priddy was shadowing assured him that he had done well considering the difficulty of the test.
"I learned a lot, Priddy said. "It was very helpful as far as understanding what the job actually entails. And I also gained the confidence in finding out that this is something I can accomplish."
Evan Mecklenburg, a senior history major from Cincinnati, completed his externship at Leo Burnett Advertising in Chicago. He shadowed the company's senior director of planning.
"I would definitely suggest it to others," he said.
Some students said the experience helped them narrow down the specific area of a field they're interested in. Some said they learned there were certain jobs they weren't interested in.
Students completed externships in Chicago, St. Louis and Cincinnati.
