GSP at Centre hits the ground running

First week of program features speakers, films and Olympiad to complement classes

RELEASED: June 27, 2002

DANVILLE, KY-The Governor's Scholars arrived on Centre's campus this week. The 343 students had plenty of activities to keep them busy as the 2002 Governor's Scholars Program got underway.

Aside from their classes, the Scholars watched educational films, heard a speech by cross-Atlantic rower Tori-Murden McClure and became more familiar with their surroundings.

Murden-McClure, the first woman to row the Atlantic solo, delivered the keynote address to the Centre senior class in 2000 and has been a frequent guest of the GSP.

The Community Weekend kicks off Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the XVIth Olympiad, GSP style. The Olympiad is a two-hour funfest in which GSP students compete against each other in events.

A dance will be held later that night.

Students are encouraged to awake early on Sunday to catch the World Cup Finals pitting Germany against Brazil. The men's soccer match begins at 7 a.m.

The program, in its 20th year, takes place June 23-July 27 at Centre.
