Barton takes over as president of Alumni Association

RELEASED: Oct. 17, 2002

DANVILLE, KY—Dr. John Barton '79 says the education he received as a student at Centre College helped him become a solid communicator.

He'll be putting those skills to work as the new president of the Centre College Alumni Association. Barton will lead the organization during the 2002-04 term.

As the association's president, Dr. Barton will attend the three Centre Board of Trustee meetings held each year in order to report to the trustees on behalf of the Alumni Association. He'll also preside at Alumni Board meetings, present awards at the Alumni Recognition Ceremony at Homecoming and perform various other duties.

Dr. Barton, director of maternal-fetal medicine at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, has been heavily involved with his alma mater through the years. He started the Barton-Walkup Scholarship in honor of his former Centre chemistry professor, John Walkup. The scholarship allows Centre students who are interested in scientific research to work with Centre professors during the summer.

Dr. Barton's help was also crucial during the 2000 Vice Presidential Debate held at Centre. He spent time away from his busy medical practice to help in the temporary media center that was set up on campus during the debate.

Dr. Barton specializes in high-risk pregnancies. He has conducted research and presented papers throughout the world on obstetrics.

He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Centre. He has a master of science degree as well as a medical degree from the University of Kentucky.

Barton and his wife, Lisa Stephens Barton, have two children: William and Lucy.
