Senior profile: Jacob Martin

A look at one of Centre's outstanding seniors

RELEASED: Dec. 26, 2002

Name: Jacob Martin

Hometown: Danville, Ky.

Major: double major: government and religion

Study Abroad/Internships: "I'm going to Geneva, Switzerland, and Strasbourg, France, with Eric and Truly Mount during CentreTerm to study global ethics. It should be an awesome trip, and one that I'm really looking forward to. As far as internships go, I worked with Economics Professor David Anderson the summer after my freshman year as a policy intern. My sophomore year I did an internship with Southland Christian Church's Senior Adults Department as well as interning in late summer for the finance department of the Democratic National Committee. I worked this past year in a full-time internship with the Kentucky Democratic Party."

Extracurricular activities: Student Affairs Committee Chair for the Student Government Association; on Centre's convocation and planning and priorities committees; president of Phi Kappa Tau; student representative to the Alumni Association Board of Directors; resident assistant; student representative to the Religion department; member of the Politics Society. "And I enjoy jogging when I have the time."

What are your plans for the holiday break?: "After I spend the first part of my break recovering from finals, I'm going to visit a couple of law schools in the Washington D.C. area. I'm going with my family to Florida to celebrate the holidays in a slightly warmer environment before heading out Jan. 4th to Switzerland."

What are you reading outside the classroom? "Right now, I'm reading Bob Woodward's Bush at War, in addition to a Christmas story every now and then."

Future plans: "I've applied to several law schools throughout the Eastern part of the country, and I haven't heard back from most of them. Hopefully, I'll be admitted to and attend a quality law school and then begin practicing some type of public interest law in just a few years. Eventually, it would be nice to settle down and have a family too, but not quite yet."

Quotable: "For all of the praise and acclaim that Centre receives from national publications and rankings, there's something intangible about 'The Centre Experience' that goes miles beyond anything that these well-intended reviews could ever capture. To most people who come here, myself included, the four years spent at Centre offer an extraordinary opportunity to receive a holistic education without parallel. Centre has given me the chance to make lifelong friendships, learn more about the world around me, and—above all—to be a good citizen by thinking globally and acting locally. I honestly feel that my time at Centre has made me a better person. There isn't a much higher compliment than that."
