Professor emeritus to take part in Kentucky Author Day

Kitty Baird book chronicles history of women's sports at Centre

DANVILLE, KY—As part of Kentucky Author Day, Kitty Rogers Baird, a retired professor and coach from Centre College, will be signing her book on the College's history of women's athletics Saturday, Aug. 31, at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lexington. The book signing will take place from 2 to 3 p.m.

Nearly 150 years of women's athletics at Centre is explored in Baird's "Women Athletes Blazing a Trail: A History of Women's Participation in Sport at a Small Liberal Arts College." The 204-page book released last fall takes a look at the obstacles female athletes have had to overcome in their fight for equality with men's sports.

Baird graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Radford College in Virginia. She holds advanced degrees from the Woman's College (UNC-Greensboro) and Eastern Kentucky University. At Centre, where she taught for more than 40 years, she started and directed the women's sports programs. Baird coached women's basketball, field hockey, and tennis. She was founder of two college women's athletic conferences. She retired at the end of 1999 as professor and chair of health and human performance and associate director of athletics.
