Blackburn and Hayden named March Volunteers of the Month

RELEASED: April 18, 2002

DANVILLE, KY-Two Centre juniors have been selected as March Volunteers of the Month — Ethan Blackburn for his work as coordinator of the college's blood drive and Heather Hayden as co-chair of Hunger and Homelessness Week.

The Centre blood drive held in March is the second that Blackburn has organized. "It was extremely successful," Blackburn said. "We collected 77 pints of blood with the Central Kentucky Blood Center. I'm happy with this drive because all of the blood we collected will go to the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center to help the people of Danville and Boyle County."

Blackburn has helped for three years with the annual Boyle County cleanup Centre arranges for the freshman class and has worked with the Salvation Army and Project Winterize.

Hayden, who co-chaired Hunger and Homelessness Week along with senior Carrie Leslie, was responsible for choosing and organizing activities. Those activities included the Soup on Us program with Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a clothing drive.

"The soup kitchen was very successful," Hayden said. "Several volunteers attended the entire day to help with food preparation, delivery, serving and clean up. Over 30 meals were sent out to homebound elderly and disabled persons that day."

The clothing drive, which sought donations for area shelters, was equally successful.

Hayden also is a member of the Bonner Leadership Program/Americorps, a Majik Mentor through the Danville school system and this summer plans to be the VolunTeen Coordinator at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

The college launched the volunteer award program to show appreciation to the many students who provide service to the local community. Each year, around 60 percent of all Centre students become community volunteers. The college encourages volunteer service by planning a community service day each year for all first-year students. Trina McFarland serves as Centre's director of volunteer service.

Kentucky's highest ranked national institution, Centre is listed by U.S. News and World Report among the country's top 50 national liberal arts colleges and is the most affordable college in that group. Centre leads all colleges and universities in the percentage of alumni who give annual financial support.
