| Broken records: Three track & field marks set
RELEASED: April 11, 2002
DANVILLE, KY-Centre College track & field athletes are setting new marks this season as three records were recently surpassed.
Andrew Smith broke the Centre school record in the discus at a recent track meet at Emory University in Atlanta. Smith's throw was 151 feet, 4 inches, breaking a school record that had stood since 1980. Smith, a junior, is a three-year letter winner in track and is also an offensive tackle on the football team. Coach Lisa Owens was excited about Smith's performance.
"To break a record that's existed since 1980 is really exciting. Andrew has worked extremely hard on his technique and is deserving of this achievement. He's a delightful young man and fun to coach."
Diane Thomas and Sarah Moore also broke Centre school records in Atlanta.
Thomas, a freshman, ran the 3000-meter steeplechase in 13 minutes and 10 seconds while Moore, a sophomore, broke her own record in the pole vault with a mark of 8 feet, 1 inch.
Owens said Thomas and Moore have bright futures for the Lady Colonels.
"Diane and Sarah will only continue to break their own records here at Centre," she said. "They love to compete and try to get better every day at practice. We're glad they'll both be with us for a while. I think they'll have their best days at our conference championships in Memphis a couple of weeks from now."
The track & field team next competes April 13 at the Cumberland (Ky.) Invitational. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships will be held April 27 at Rhodes College in Memphis.
