Simek named Player of the Week in SCAC
RELEASED: Sept. 19, 2002
DANVILLE, KYIn the most recent NSCAA polls released on Monday, Centre is ranked 13th in the nation and second in the Central Region.
The team is 5-0 on the season and hosts Oglethorpe at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Stan Simek of Centre College, a sophomore defender from St. Louis, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's Player of the Week in men's soccer for matches played Sept. 9-15.
Simek played a vital role in Centre's fifth straight victory, a 2-0 shutout of Washington University on Sunday. Simek, a captain, anchored the Colonels' defense in limiting Washington to just four shots on goal, and helping Centre record its fourth shutout in five games this season. In addition, Simek hit the game-winning goal in the remaining seconds of the first period on a free kick from 25 yards out to put Centre ahead 1-0 at the half.
"He stands very worthy of this honor and it not only shows how hard he has worked but also how hard the team has played," said Assistant Coach Mark Hudson. "He's really stepped up since the injury to Jeff Carrier."
Carrier, a senior from Lafayette, La., is out for the season with a broken leg.
