Senior profile: Adriana Melnyk

A look at one of Centre’s seniors

RELEASED: Jan. 24, 2002

Name: Adriana Melnyk

Hometown: Indianapolis, Ind.

Major: Anthropology

Study abroad: Studied abroad spring 2001 in Merida, Mexico.

Extracurricular activities: Business Manager of the Cento, Centre's student newspaper; Head Recruitment Counselor for Panhellenic Council; program student for anthropology/sociology department; Student Congress Representative; co-Peer Advisor to international students; member of Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association; 2002-03 Fulbright Grant candidate.

How is CentreTerm going for you?: "It's very condensed and fast-paced, and I miss having Wednesdays free, but my class is pretty interesting. We're trying to 'Define the South,' and Danville is a good place as any to do that."

Future plans: "I've applied for a Fulbright to combat 'brain drain' in the Dominican Republic for next year, so I hope to be doing that. If not, I'll most likely work for Teach for America in either Houston or the Rio Grande Valley and teach in a bilingual classroom, and I'll later attend law school for a joint JD/MPA."

Quotable: "If it wasn't for Centre, I'd be on the same track I was when I graduated from high school. Being involved here, in class and in outside activities, and developing friendships with professors has challenged me to explore things I might ordinarily not have found interesting. I'll be graduating with a whole new perspective and set of intellectual interests. I don't think I could have found that anywhere else."
