Mooney named MVP of Centre Tournament

RELEASED: January 4, 2002

DANVILLE, KY—Senior guard Matt Mooney of Dixon, Ky., was named Most Valuable Player of the Papa John's/Hampton Inn Christmas Tournament at Centre College this past weekend.

Mooney scored 21 points against Berea in the championship game. He hit seven of 16 three-point attempts and finished with 21 points. Mooney scored 14 points in the first-round game to total 35 points for the two games. He also added seven assists and five steals.

Centre claimed the tournament championship with a 71-68 win against Berea. The Colonels defeated Concordia (Ill.) 83-64 in the first-round game.

"Matt is the most fundamentally sound player I've ever coached," said head coach Greg Mason. "He's picture perfect in everything he does. He's a good shooter, an outstanding defender, and he's always in the right spot. When the other team's on a run, the first thing I try to do is get Matt back on the floor."

Mooney is currently Centre's leading scorer with a 14.3 average and is perfect at the free throw line (14-14). The Colonels (5-3) will entertain Rhodes College and Hendrix College this Friday and Sunday, respectively.
