Weckenbrock named SCAC men's soccer Player of the Week

RELEASED: Oct. 3, 2002

DANVILLE, KY—Centre College's Mike Weckenbrock has been named Player of the Week in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in men's soccer.

Weckenbrock is a junior forward from Covington, Ky., and played an important part in the Colonels' two road wins in the conference the weekend of Sept. 21-22.

Weckenbrock, a team captain, recorded one goal and five assists in Centre's 11-0 win over Oglethorpe. The five assists ties him for fourth all-time in NCAA history for total assists in one game. Weckenbrock fulfilled all his roles in Centre's other conference win, a 6-0 thumping of Millsaps/

The two wins have propelled the Centre soccer team to 11th nationally in the polls. The Colonels, behind goalie Jacob Sither, have won eight of their nine games this season.

Head Coach Jeb Burch is pleased with the team's performance.

"For Centre to have back-to-back SCAC Players of the Week says a lot about the individuals on this team."

Burch said that the SCAC is rated as the nation's top NCAA Division III Conference in men's soccer.

"Anytime a player is granted this honor, it says a lot about that person's soccer ability. Yet, it has little to do with our individual performances right now. I know Mike is proud of this honor, but our focus has been on the team all year. I think Mike would note that had his teammates not played well around him, then he would not have received this honor."

Stan Simek was the other Centre soccer player to be honored as an SCAC Player of the Week this season.
